THE INCENSE ALTAR
Ara the altar takes its name from a small constellation depicted in early illustrations as an altar with rising smoke, incense, or sacrificial offerings.
The Incense Altar represents an ancient roman altar, hand carved and engraved in wax before being cast in recycled brass in the UK, using the ancient art of lost wax casting.
A weighty, solid, versatile object, The Incense Altar is designed for offering and burning incense sticks or cones, and can also be used as a paperweight or talisman around the home.
With a bushed finish, leaving the altar pale gold in colour.
Please allow up to 3 weeks for your altar to be created before dispatch.
Accompanied by a natural linen & GOTS certified organic cotton pouch, designed & made in-house with minimal waste, using fabric woven in Lancashire, and naturally hand dyed by Lauren.
Traditionally, cast brass objects use a base of recycled brass, topped up with virgin brass. The Incense Altar, however, is made using 100% recycled brass to minimise strain on our planet’s resources and to repurpose existing material into something beautiful, with a conscience.
Once cast, each altar is filed, sanded and polished by Lauren in the Ara the altar workshop, powered by 100% renewable energy.
Every altar is packaged responsibly with recyclable and biodegradable packaging materials.
Ara the altar creates earth-aware adornment for the everyday. Lauren’s aim is to provide assurance for like-minded individuals who are looking to make long lasting, purposeful purchases that strive for minimal impact on our only planet.
With the introduction of House of Ara, Lauren is developing a series of objects for low impact living and self care to be offered alongside a careful curation of objects made responsibly in the UK by like-minded brands, with a focus on daily rituals.
A note from Lauren
For some time I’d wanted to create an altar; combining the creation of this object with a purposeful design to be used for burning incense felt like the perfect fit.
The Incense Altar encapsulates the brand with a nod to the ancient world and its fascinating relationship with astronomy and nature, allowing for an offering, made responsibly and for longevity.
For me, lighting incense on the altar has become a really pleasurable experience and serves as a reminder of Ara’s values and the importance in slowing down.
